New Hampshire Local Service Opportunities

New Hampshire is home to a number of different volunteer programs and organizations. Whether you are looking to volunteer for senior services, or you’re interested in AmeriCorps, there are many options available. You can find opportunities through AmeriCorps Seniors, or you can apply for a Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program. You can even help people in your own community by volunteering with a local food pantry.

AmeriCorps

AmeriCorps is a national volunteer service organization that helps improve the lives of Americans through community service. The New Hampshire chapter offers a variety of opportunities to serve. Members have the opportunity to serve in a variety of fields and earn money in the process. This service organization also offers end-of-service education awards and a living allowance.

AmeriCorps Seniors Companions

AmeriCorps funds the Senior Companion Program in New Hampshire. Previously known as the Corporation for National and Community Services, the program is considered one of the least expensive options in the home care system. However, the program requires local match funds in order to be viable. The funding request supports the vetting and training process for volunteers as well as program development and staff education.

AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP

If you are 55 years old and interested in volunteering, the AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP program can be for you. Volunteers in this program are screened, undergo background checks, and complete training before beginning their service. In return, they donate their time and energy to help older adults in their communities.

Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program

The Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program in the State of New Hampshire is a program that helps fill food pantries with locally grown food. The program launched in the North Country in 2018 and aims to expand statewide by 2020. Initially funded with $100,000, the program has since more than doubled its funding. Its goal is to increase access to locally grown foods in underserved communities, while advancing resiliency of the supply chain.

AmeriCorps members and volunteers

Last year, AmeriCorps members and volunteers across New Hampshire worked to meet local needs, improve communities and expand opportunities. More than $7 million in federal funds were spent on community projects and programs. These service opportunities benefit nonprofits, public agencies, faith-based organizations and community groups. The programs are administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).

Funding sources

The State of New Hampshire collects revenue in many different ways. While the State’s general fund provides funding for transportation and many local services, not all revenue is derived from taxes. In Fiscal Year 2017, only 38 percent of all revenue was derived from tax revenue, with the rest coming from fees, charges for services, and federal grants. While State funding is essential for local service, local governments also rely on local property tax to meet their funding needs.
